The article considers the stylistic devices of creating prose poeticalness in the fairy tales by Oscar Wilde and the short stories by Dylan Thomas as well as in the contemporary flash fiction stories. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that the main criterion for determining the language means of poeticalness is the stylistic principle of foregrounding, i.e. such principle of text organization when the author attracts attention to the most important elements of the message. According to our investigation, the most important type of foregrounding is stylistic convegence. Due to the accumulation of different stylistic devices which help to create a considerable aesthetic and expressive effect, convergences are an explicit device of prose poeticalness. The linguistic approach to the investigation of prose poeticalness was suggested by the German scientist Wolf Schmid. Our research is based on the devices of poeticalness defined by Schmid ( extended tropes, parallelism ) and the devices determined in our research ( Yemets 2012 ). In this paper, prose poeticalness is characterized as the introduction of poetic principles into a prose text, with poetic function being the dominant function. The reseach includes the elements of diachronic and synchronic approaches. The diachronic approach revealed the difference in the semantics and place of convergences in the classical and contemporary short stories. While in in the texts by Wilde and Thomas the metaphoric-phonetical convergence prevails which functions in such strong position as the beginning of the story, in flash fiction stories convergences contain metaphors, similes, antithesis, gradation, syntactical repetitions, are smaller in size and ane found mainly in the endings. In classical stories devices of prose poeticalness emphasize the beauty of nature and people's appearance, while the authors of flash fiction foreground the ideas of sympathy, tolerance between people. The translation techniques include rendering metaphors literally or with lexical and grammatical replacement, retaining the conceptual ideas of poeticalness. Sound repetitions as elements of convergences can be rendered with the same or similar sounds because such repetitions create semantic unity and aesthetic effect of the poetical prose.
