Abstract

The article delineates the main sources of English-derived precedent phenomena in contemporary Ukrainian literature. A precedent phenomenon is viewed as a bearer of culturally significant information. Various fields of societal consciousness can act as sources of this information. The research identifies 11 primary sources of precedent elements, each aligning with distinct aspects of the English-speaking informational space. They encompass literary works; music; films and animation; television; idioms, proverbs, and eponyms; folklore and mythology; brands, product names, and slogans; historical and cultural heritage; geographical and administrative designations; social realia, etc.

The productivity of various sources of English-derived precedent elements strongly correlates with the importance of their respective domains in the globalized informational landscape. The most prolific source of precedent units was found to be English brand and product names, as well as slogans (26%). Units borrowed from English literature take the second place (20%). Popular English music, cinema, and animation follow at 15% and 9%, respectively. This underscores the high productivity of units related to mass consumption and popular culture.

Precedent elements of English origin, rooted in phrasal idioms, proverbs, and eponyms, exhibit moderate productivity (8%), reflecting the widespread use of English aphoristic and idiomatic units. Finally, the least productive units come from the fields of historical and cultural heritage, social, geographical, and administrative realia, folklore, mythology, television, religion, science, etc.

In conclusion, English-derived precedent phenomena prominently featured in modern Ukrainian literary works highlight the rich connection of Ukrainian literature with a broad cultural and informational context. This paves the way for future studies into the expressive potential of these elements in various discourses.
