Abstract

The relevance of the research topic is determined by the necessity to develop teaching methods for various sociolinguistic disciplines, with a particular focus on the creation of a bank of examples for the argumentation of sociolinguistic categories in courses (eight in total) studied by students of the Faculty of Philology of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The article is devoted to revealing the updated content of the concept of ’linguistic resilience’ and changing its form to the term linguistic resilience of an individual, group, or nation under the influence of new sources of analysis – publications of the diaspora.

The theoretical basis of the article is founded on the provisions of the methodology of teaching various linguistic disciplines (O. Kostiv, D. Mazuryk) and on the substantiation of the theory of linguistic stability in the works of A. Zagnitko, H. Matsyuk, I. Renchka, and O. Trachenko. The analysis drew upon the monthly issues of the magazine Novi Dni (New Days) from 1950 to 1969 (edited by Petro Volynyak), which had not previously been examined from a sociolinguistic perspective. A range of qualitative methods were employed to analyse the publications, including sampling, discourse analysis and contextual-interpretative analysis. This approach enabled the identification and systematisation of novel aspects of the concept of ’linguistic resilience’. While the works of researchers elucidate the meaning of this category in relation to individuals and nations, the author’s conclusions also attest to linguistic resilience as a feature of a group (community) of representatives of the Ukrainian minority outside mainland Ukraine. The results of the analysis contribute to the codification of the sociolinguistic terminology system. Concurrently, they provide new examples of the concept’s content when characterising it in various disciplines of the sociolinguistic cycle.
