COMMON ROOT ADJECTIVES-PARONYMS IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC TERMINOLOGY SYSTEMS OF THE UKRAINIAN AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES

Abstract

The article considers intralinguistic paronyms-adjectives used within the professional language of economics in Ukrainian and English. The authors traced how intra-linguistic paronymy is preserved or disappears in translation, as well as how the degree of closeness of paronyms changes. Such changes happen in either graphic or phonetic aspects, sometimes- in both of them. The cases when found when one of the paronyms - adjectives in the source language while translating professional texts is transformed into a noun, which means both translation transformation and reduction of intra-linguistic paronymy in the target language. Only in some rare occasions, there are several translation options, and then the translator has a choice, depending on the context, target audience, etc., to retain or move away from the paronymy in target text compared to the source.

To emphasizes the practical aspect of the article the authors focus on paronyms that might be easily confused even within one language. Such approach is considered as an appropriate compliment to already existing research papers on paronyms which are found across different languages thus presenting challenges for correct translation. Moreover, in some cases in addition to dictionary definitions real usage of paronyms in professional economic text (in either English or Ukrainian language depending on the direction of translation) was considered in order to clarify semantic differences between some paronyms.  As for the time when research was conducted, generally available artificial intelligence or translation software in some cases failed to distinguish the difference between paronyms analyzed in the article.
