Abstract

The peculiarities of translation English infinitive in the function of adverbial modifier into Ukrainian are described. The infinitive is the non-finite form of the verb, which combines the properties of the verb with those of the noun, serving as the verbal name of a process. Translation of the English infinitive is greatly predetermined by its form and sometimes by its function in the sentence. The infinitive functioning as a single part of the sentence, i.e., not being a component of a secondary predication complex, has usually corresponding equivalents in Ukrainian.

The article deals with the infinitive can be an adverbial modifier of purpose. In this function, the infinitive may be preceded by "in order" or "so as". The infinitive in the adverbial function of result is usually used after too, enough and so…as.  The infinitive used as an adverbial modifier of attendant circumstances shows what other actions take place at the same time as the action of the predicate. The infinitive used as an adverbial modifier of comparison refers to predicate groups including adjectives or adverbs in the comparative degree.

The paper analyzes the infinitive in the function of an adverbial modifier of purpose or result often has some modal meaning and is rendered usually by an infinitive. The function of some adverbial infinitives also presents difficulties in translation. For example, the English infinitive can be used to denote a subsequent event or a parallel action, which is often confused with the infinitive of purpose. The infinitive in this function is usually rendered by a parallel finite verb.

Therefore, we can say that when translating the infinitive of result, a translator should take care to render properly the connotation of the construction: the infinitive with too implies a negative meaning, while the infinitive with enough suggests a positive one.
