The article examines the peculiarities of creating a rebellious character in teenage literature.
It has been established that scholars use the concepts of ‘character,’ ‘character of a character,’ or ‘artistic character’ to describe a character. Researchers of works for children and young adults distinguish a number of types of children's images in such literature. There is also a gender distinction, in particular ‘girls' texts,’ where the main characters are girls with all the complexities and manifestations of femininity.
Using the example of one of the heroines of Jacqueline Wilson's book ‘The Painted Mum’, the peculiarities of creating the rebellious character of a teenage girl named Zirka are analysed. It is found that the girl's character is formed in conditions of constant stress and anxiety, and she cannot even imagine what it is like to be a child. Her anxiety and habit of keeping everything under control ultimately stand in the way of her happy childhood, as she is very worried about her younger sister. Zirka's dominant character traits can be determined indirectly, as most of the girl's characteristics, impressions, feelings, and thoughts are described by her younger sister. Nevertheless, her tendency to resist when she feels injustice, when a situation does not meet her expectations, etc., is obvious.
