DIFFICULTIES OF MILITARY TRANSLATION IN MEDIA TEXTS

Abstract

The article deals with the problems of translating military terminology from English and German into Ukrainian on the example of media texts. In the context of modern military conflicts and global crises, the number of military news and analytical materials published in English and German has increased significantly, which underlines the need for high-quality translation to ensure adequate perception of information. The purpose of the article is to analyse the main difficulties that arise when translating military terms and phrases from English and German into Ukrainian in the context of media texts. The article interprets military terminology as a system of specialised terms and concepts used in the field of military affairs. It covers a wide range of topics, including strategy, tactics, weapons, military ranks, operations, logistics, as well as specific aspects of military organisation and management. The authors define military translation in media discourse as the process of adaptation and transformation of military texts from one language into another in the context of media, which includes not only the accurate transfer of content, but also the consideration of stylistic, emotional and cultural aspects that affect the perception of information by a wide audience. The article analyses the structural and lexical differences, peculiarities of military terms in English and German, their cultural colouring and reproduction in Ukrainian. The article highlights the difficulties of adapting terms, in particular in composite words and military abbreviations that require accuracy and contextualisation, as well as in translating metaphors. The recommendations are aimed at improving the quality of translation of military media materials.
