Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive investigation of the challenges involved in translating agricultural terminology from English into Ukrainian and vice versa, encompassing the cognitive, linguocultural, and pragmatic dimensions of interpreting and rendering domain-specific concepts. The scholarly relevance of the topic is determined by the intensification of international cooperation in the agricultural sector, the expansion of transnational scientific communication, and the need to ensure a high level of precision, standardization, and conceptual consistency in specialized vocabulary. The methodological framework of the study is based on an analysis of contemporary scientific works, monographs, reference sources, and international standards that represent various approaches to terminology translation and the structuring of sectoral knowledge. Three key analytical dimensions are identified and characterized: the cognitive one (knowledge representation, conceptualization, and categorization of agricultural concepts), the linguocultural one (the influence of national and cultural factors on the formation of terminological systems), and the pragmatic one (the functional and communicative conditions of terminology use across different genres of professional discourse). The study establishes that translation difficulties arise from the polysemy and multilevel nature of agricultural terms, discrepancies between the conceptual models of the two languages, differences in legal, technological, and cultural traditions, as well as the need to balance terminological precision with communicative accessibility. A number of terms from the domains of crop production, animal husbandry, and agrotechnologies are analyzed, demonstrating that an adequate translation requires in-depth conceptual examination. The linguocultural dimension is illustrated through terms that lack established Ukrainian equivalents or contain culturally marked elements. The pragmatic aspect is explored using diverse types of specialized texts, in which the functioning of terminology is determined by communicative purpose and target audience. The article also outlines promising directions for further research.
