Abstract

The article examines the development of translation competence among students of Polish Studies while working with documents written in the official and business style. This functional style is marked by a high degree of standardization, clearly defined terminology, formalized syntactic structures, and strict adherence to linguistic norms. As a result, the translation of such texts requires not only advanced language proficiency but also an in-depth understanding of genre conventions, textual organization, and the pragmatic intentions embedded in administrative and institutional communication.

The study identifies the most frequent difficulties encountered by students when translating official and business documentation, including challenges related to terminological accuracy, the handling of culturally specific administrative concepts, and the correct reproduction of formal tone and structural coherence. By analyzing students’ translation tasks and learning trajectories, the research outlines effective methodological strategies aimed at strengthening key components of translation competence. Particular attention is devoted to the development of linguistic, textual, cultural, and professional competences, all of which are essential for ensuring precision, consistency, and contextual adequacy in translation.

Drawing on contemporary educational practices, classroom observations, and practical translation assignments, the article proposes a set of recommendations for enhancing the preparation of future translators within Polish Studies. These recommendations emphasize the integration of authentic documents into the learning process, the use of comparative stylistic analysis, and the implementation of targeted exercises designed to build terminological awareness and professional decision-making skills. Overall, the study contributes to the refinement of translator training programmes and underscores the importance of systematic, practice-oriented instruction in preparing students to work effectively with texts in the official and business style.
