PECULIARITIES OF TRANSLATING LEGAL TEXTS FROM POLISH INTO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

Translation problems encountered in the field of scientific vocabulary represent a distinct and highly relevant area of linguistic and translational research, which in recent years has attracted growing attention from academic communities in both Ukraine and Poland. The specificity of scientific terminology, its functional diversity, and the constant introduction of neologisms in various disciplines make this field particularly challenging for translators. This complexity is especially noticeable in the legal domain, where precise terminology and stylistic consistency play a decisive role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the translated text. Accordingly, the study emphasises the importance of addressing translation difficulties not only from a purely linguistic perspective but also in terms of cultural, stylistic, and pragmatic equivalence.

The research focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of translation. On the one hand, it analyses the fundamental functions of translation, the role of context, and the impact of style and vocabulary choice on the perception of the target text by its intended audience. On the other hand, it explores practical methods and pedagogical approaches aimed at the development of translation competence among students and professionals. Special consideration is given to strategies for handling specialised terminology, the role of parallel corpora, and the integration of digital tools, such as machine translation systems and computer-assisted translation (CAT) technologies, in enhancing the quality and efficiency of the translation process.

The main objectives of this research are twofold. First, to identify the peculiarities of translating scientific literature from Polish into Ukrainian, with particular emphasis on legal discourse, while at the same time developing translators’ professional skills. Second, to assess the extent to which innovations, technological solutions, and modern didactic practices influence the accuracy, consistency, and overall effectiveness of translations in the legal and scientific-technical fields. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of translation as an interdisciplinary phenomenon and to provide practical recommendations for improving translation training and professional practice in Ukraine and beyond.
