Abstract

The article is devoted to the actual problem of J. Conrad's work and his unique language.

The recognized classic of English literature today is one of the iconic figures who stood at the origins of two notable literary trends – imagery and symbolism.

The internal "dialogue of cultures" directly influenced the artist's idiostyle. The semantics of idioms, which the writer reveals to the reader, is a unique element of the text, reflecting the worldview and soul of the author himself.

Within the linguistic picture of the world, his work finds its linguistic reflection in an associative background, since the basis of the creation of idioms of an English writer of Polish origin can mostly be explained only by using associative factors. The work of the writer was studied by many scientists; however, they still cannot find a certain linguistic toolkit for studying the writer's artistic features.

The purpose of the work is to reveal the linguistic and cultural specificity of idioms in the works of Conrad by studying their semantics.

Research units reflect cultural values, norms of behavior, mentality of the people, therefore, they should be considered from a linguistic and cultural aspect.

Their analysis makes it possible to better understand the author's idea, the peculiarities of his worldview, as well as the cultural context in which he created. Idioms in the author's work perform figurative, expressive, emotional and symbolic functions.

The associative background of an idiom, as a set of associations (ethnocultural, historical, mythological), arise in the speaker of the language when it is perceived.

J. Konrad uses idioms to make the language of the characters more realistic, emotional, and figurative.
