The article provides a detailed review of the history of proper names’ study in Ukraine, starting from the end of the 19th century and ending in 2000. Among 634 researched editions, there are 29 dissertations, 11 monographs, 37 dictionaries, reference books, manual books and guidebooks, 53 collections of scientific papers, 504 articles and abstracts of reports at scientific conferences and seminars.
First of all, these articles considered issues related to the dynamics of personal names, their etymology, variability, structure, word formation, semantics, translation into other languages, motivation of surnames and toponyms, comparison of Ukrainian anthroponyms with foreign ones and their adaptation in the Ukrainian language, the register of various territories’ names and time periods, functioning in official documents and folklore works, other theoretical and practical inquiries.
It was found that the analysis of names was often carried out in parallel with the characterization of surnames and nicknames.
Bibliographic index «Ukrainian Onomastics» (2013), prepared by the team of compilers (executive editor S. O. Verbych), article «Ukrainian Onomastics: Achievements and Problems» by A. M. Zubko (1992), bibliographic and information reference book «Onomastic Studies in Ukraine» by M. M. Torchynsky (2007) and a number of other dissertations and monographs, that examined Ukrainian names in structural-derivational, semantic-motivational and functional aspects, became the main source of research.
Additional study requires issues related to the description of personal names in foreign studies, primarily Russian, Belarusian and Polish, which significantly influenced the formation of scientific views of Ukrainian anthroponymists in the twentieth century and early XXI century.
It is time to prepare a monograph that will be devoted to Ukrainian male and female personal names with a detailed description of their semantics, origin, variability and summary information, which will relate to the structure, etymology and other defining features of proper names.
