TRANSLATION FEATURES OF ENGLISH MILITARY TERMINOLOGY

Abstract

The scientific problem of English military terminology translation is connected with specificity studying of military language, research of origin tendencies and use of terms in military texts, revealing the basic ways of legal terms translation. An important criterion for quality translation of military texts is the professional translator training, his competence and erudition. The aim of the study is to analyze the existing practice and problems of military translation, to determine the features and methods of English military terminology translation. All military texts are filled with specific military and technical terms, abbreviations and idioms. Many of these terms and definitions have a huge variety of interpretations, depending on the context. The activities of a military translator require special training, skills and abilities. A military translator must be a universal specialist. The training of a military translator should cover all types and methods of translation. There are the following types of military texts: military-artistic, military-journalistic, military-political, military-scientific, military-technical, acts of military management (various military documents). Purely military texts are scientific and technical materials and acts of management related to the activities of troops and military institutions of the armed forces. The main stylistic features of military-technical texts are: accurate and clear material presentation, the absence of elements of emotional speech. The main emphasis is on the logical rather than the emotional side of the material presentation. Military vocabulary - is a kind of special vocabulary, because due to the specific communicative-functional orientation. It is at the junction of two language functional styles: official-business and scientific-technical. The correct translation of military materials depends on the correct translation of terms, because most of the military vocabulary is occupied by military and military-technical terms. In our research it is identified the military terminology ways of translation, namely: loan translation, transcription, equivalent translation, descriptive translation and explication. It is established that most military terms are translated by the method of equivalent translation and loan translation, and the least used method is transcoding.
