THE PLACE OF URBAN NAMES IN THE SYSTEM OF TOPONYMIC UNITS OF VINNYTSIA

Abstract

The article deals with urban names in the system of toponymic units of Vinnytsia. First of all, the renamed urban topographical objects during the period of 2015-2023 are considered, as this period covered the processes of decommunization and decolonization in Ukraine in general and Vinnytsia region as well. The novelty of the research is that the city's urban names of this period have not been the subject of a separate study yet, so they not only draw the attention of researchers but also deserve a profound study.

Urban names belong to the partially studied units, despite the fact that they are one of the most numerous groups of the onymic field. They are important onymic units that impact the development and formation of proprietary vocabulary in general and allow to memorialize outstanding figures of the country and form the historical memory of the inhabitants of a particular locality.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the components, functioning, and development of the Vinnytsia urbanonymicon in the system of toponymic units of the city.

The lexical and semantic potential of the streets, squares, parks, and gardens renamed in Vinnytsia, as well as the names of new memorial complexes and places are clarified.

The majority of names are memorial names, or names in tribute. They honor the memory not only of those outstanding personalities whose life was directly connected with Vinnytsia and whose activities influenced the city's social, political, and cultural life, but also of famous Ukrainian and foreign figures whose life was only indirectly connected with the Podillia region. Therefore, the city's urban names are socially motivated.

The actuality of the study of urban names consists in the fact that there is an urgent necessity to record all the names of inner-city objects available at a particular time, to reveal their cultural background and information potential, and to preserve them as a valuable source of linguistic and cultural significance.
