NATIONWIDE CONTEXT OF THE NAMES OF GARMENTS IN THEEAST PODILLIAN IDIOMS OF UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The paper elaborates on the state of studying the lexicon used to refer to garments in the dialects of Ukrainian language, defines lexical-semantic features of the lexemes of the East Podillian idioms, common with the corresponding lexemes of other sub-dialects of Ukrainian dialect speech. The nominations, having parallel forms in other dialects of Ukrainian language, in particular, the Polissian idioms, the idioms of the Polissian and the South-Western dialects, the Polissian and the South-Eastern dialects, the idioms of the South-Eastern dialect, the South-Western and the South-Western dialects, the idioms of the South-Western dialect and the idioms among the three afore-mentioned dialects of Ukrainian, are identified.

It is suggested that isoglosses of the names of garments in the East Podillian idioms are followed up in the idioms of each of the three dialects of Ukrainian language. The majority of lexical-semantic parallels are found in the Middle Dnieper and the Steppe idioms of the South-Eastern dialect that border on the East Podillian idioms of the South-Western dialect. It is emphasized that the existence of parallel forms in the Polissian and the Volhynian idioms results from the pressure of northern idioms on the Podillian sub-dialect as a whole. A considerable number of lexemes that are widely used in the idioms under study are represented in all the sub-dialects of the South-Western dialect, which fact indicates that they belong to the Western macro-continuum. It is pointed out that the larger part of lexical-semantic parallels among the Polissian, Middle Dnieper and Steppe idioms are due to the fact that the studies of these dialectal areals or linguistic zones in the past decades have been based on nearly identical programmes, which allows to represent the researched segment of the dialectal lexicon as part of the continuum in the nationwide context.
