The article examines the theory of interpretation of U. Eco. In particular, the role of the reader, which is studied in the works of U. Eco: "The role of the reader" (1984), "I limiti dell'interpretazione" (1990) is analyzed. Specific attention is focused on the experience of interpreting a literary text in terms of its impact on the reader. Transformation of the theory of semiotics made by U. Eco in the direction of cooperation with text analysis that opens the way to the necessity of the existence of the text and the reader as a whole. The dependence of interpretation on the context and content and form of a literary work, the author's idea is determined. U. Eco's theory of textual cooperation gives the reader a significant role in the process of creating meaning. A necessary parameter for updating the content of the text is the reader's reading experience and understanding of the context. The text creates a reader model that is able to actualize a variety of semantic structures to decode possible worlds of contemporary literary narratives. However, U. Eco emphasizes that the text is a source of interpretations, but it is impossible to interpret the text in any way. The reader fills numerous gaps in the text, never fully explicit, using anything from a simple linguistic conclusion to a more complex deductive reasoning that pertains to the entire text. U. Eco as a writer of the postmodern era, due to the transformation of his theories and concepts, comes to the conclusion that the text and reads are an inseparable pair. The model of interpretation of U. Eco is synchronously traced in the process of reading and is always ready to help the reader, especially the uninitiated to orient in the text and text structures. According to U. Eco, all possible interpretations that the reader can comprehend are available in advance in the text.
