This article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the expression of the concepts of life and death through metaphor in the poetry of the XIX - XX centuries. The relevance of the chosen topic and the novelty of the study lie in the lack of research on the functioning of a complex metaphor-concept, as well as due to the need to overcome gaps in the field of rendering of metaphorization of poetic thinking in translation. The aim of the research is to identify ways of functioning of metaphor as a stylistic means of revealing the concept in the poetics of English-language works, as well as the peculiarities of its reproduction in the Ukrainian language.
In the course of the work the concepts of metaphor and concept and their role in such a science as cognitive linguistics were studied.
Metaphor is not only a means of forming the lexical meaning of words, but also a key way of human cognitive and mental activity. It can also serve as a representation of human knowledge in the minds of the individual and express this knowledge verbally.
The concepts of "life" and "death" were considered on the example of the poems of Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. The role of metaphor as a means of expressing these concepts was analyzed. During the analysis of the two poems, examples of the authors’ individual perception of the world and expression of their vision with the help of stylistic means, including metaphors, were considered.
Based on the research and analysis, conclusions were drawn. When translating literary texts it is necessary to understand and take into account the idiosyncrasy of the author and the specifics of the target language. Therefore, conceptual analysis in translation can be an important criterion of quality.
The results of this study can be used later to better understand the role of conceptual metaphors and their functions in the outline of English poetry.
